Dutch documents for Germany: why translation is still required
Dutch and German are closely related — but German law makes no exception for linguistic similarity. All foreign-language documents submitted to German authorities must be accompanied by certified German translations, regardless of how similar the language is to German.

VOG: the most requested Dutch document
The Verklaring omtrent het gedrag (VOG) is the Dutch police clearance certificate — the equivalent of the German Führungszeugnis. Two types:
- VOG NP (Natural Person): For individuals — most common for German naturalisation and regulated employment background checks.
- VOG RP (Rechtspersoon): For companies — occasionally required for German business purposes.
The VOG is issued by Justis (Dutch Ministry of Justice screening authority) and is time-limited (typically 3 months). For German naturalisation, a recent VOG NP is required.

Despite EU mutual recognition, German authorities require certified German translations of your Dutch academic documents.
