English is the world's most widely understood language — but in Germany, an English-language official document has no legal standing without a certified German translation. Since 1 January 2021, UK nationals are treated as third-country nationals in Germany. UK civil documents — birth certificates, marriage certificates, DBS/ACRO checks, A-level certificates — all require certified German translation for official submissions, without exception.

United Kingdom
UK civil documents follow General Register Office (GRO) formats and are among the most straightforward to translate — clear print, standardised layout, full Latin script. Key notes:
UK full birth certificates (long form) contain more information than short form and are generally preferred by German authorities.
ACRO Criminal Records Certificate (not DBS): this is the correct document for German naturalisation applications — not the standard Basic or Standard DBS.
UK documents can be apostilled by the FCDO Legalisation Office in Milton Keynes — required for Standesamt marriage registration proceedings.
United States
US civil documents vary significantly by state. A California 1990 birth certificate looks completely different from a 2024 Texas one. Always note the state of issue when ordering. The FBI Identity History Summary Check is the standard document for German naturalisation.
Australia
Australian National Police Checks (ACIC certificates) are the standard for German naturalisation. Each Australian state's Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages issues slightly different formats. Australia joined the Hague Apostille Convention in 1995.

Why Google Translate cannot replace a certified English–German translator
Google Translate and AI tools produce outputs that can be impressively accurate for everyday text. But they cannot produce a legally certified translation for Germany — and here is why that matters practically:
No court appointment: German law (§184 GVG) requires translations for official submissions to be certified by a translator appointed by a German Landgericht. AI tools have no such appointment — so their output has no legal standing, regardless of accuracy.
No stamp: German authorities are trained to check for the sworn translator's official court stamp on every page. A translation without the stamp is rejected — the reason for rejection is the missing stamp, not the translation quality.
No accountability: If a certified translation contains an error, the sworn translator bears personal legal responsibility. AI tools bear none. German authorities require a named, legally responsible individual.
Script and formatting complexity:
English–German documents often contain stamps, seals, handwritten entries and marginal annotations that AI tools miss, misread or omit. A sworn translator transcribes and notes everything, even if illegible.

Scan quality: Every character, stamp and seal in your English document must be sharply visible in your photograph. Zoom in on your phone screen after photographing to verify. If anything is unclear, retake the photo.
Both sides: Many civil documents have stamps, registration codes or annotations on the reverse. Photograph and upload both sides.
Apostille check: Call your German authority before ordering. Ask: Brauche ich eine Apostille auf dem Dokument? The Standesamt usually requires one; the Ausländerbehörde usually does not. Get the apostille first if needed.
Correct document type: Confirm you have the right format — full extract vs summary, individual certificate vs family register extract.
Note existing name spellings: If your name appears differently in existing German records, note the exact German-record spelling in the order form so the translator can add a cross-reference note.
